Trump hopes Russia and Ukraine make deal this week
US President Donald Trump said he expects a peace deal between Russia and Ukraine this week, and anticipated major business deals with the United States for both sides if a truce is signed in the conflict that began on February 24, 2022.
US President Donald Trump said on Sunday (20.04.2025) that he expects a peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine in the coming days and anticipated "significant trade agreements with the United States" for both sides if a truce is signed in the conflict that began more than three years ago.
"Russia and Ukraine are expected to reach an agreement this week," the White House leader wrote on his Truth Social network, without giving further details about any progress in the peace talks that Washington has been trying to promote since replacing Democrat Joe Biden in office at the end of January of this year.
For his part, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky reiterated that kyiv was willing to extend the ceasefire declared by his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, for 30 days, but stated that if Russia continued fighting on Sunday, Ukraine would do so as well.
"The Ukrainian army acts and will continue to act in a completely symmetrical manner," he wrote on the social network X.
The United States and Ukraine are currently negotiating a minerals agreement that is expected to be finalized next week, Ukrainian officials said, while U.S. officials are looking for ways to ease sanctions on the Russian energy sector if Moscow agrees to end the war.
